Flagler County, FL Sheriff’s Operations and Administration Facility Space Needs Study
Flagler County is a fast-growing coastal county on Florida’s east coast. County officials had purchased a former hospital facility located in the county seat and near other county offices. Unfortunately, the hospital facility had been empty and unused for almost a decade and in that time, Florida’s heat and humidity had introduced mold and mildew throughout the structure.
The facility was renovated and the Sheriff’s Office (SO) occupied the facility. Within a short period of time, the facility was emptied to mitigate these issues which had resulted in more than 30 employee complaints filed with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). After millions of tax dollars had been spent to purchase, renovate and mitigate issues within the facility not once but twice, the Sheriff’s Office was permanently moved out of the facility.
The County retained CPS to undertake a space needs study of the Sheriff’s Office to qualify and quantify current and future needs. The situation was further complicated because the county was renovating multiple spaces to house various elements of the SO throughout the county and the SO provided law enforcement services for municipalities within the county. The study examined several sites in the county for a consolidated complex whose intent is to save tax dollars, provide safe and efficient work spaces, accommodate future growth and ensure the delivery of quality services for the resident and visitors of Flagler County.
