Florida Polytechnic University Police Department Space Needs Study
Florida Polytechnic University is a public university in Lakeland, Florida, United States. It is the newest of the 12 institutions in the State University System of Florida. It is the state's only public polytechnic university, and focuses solely on STEM education.
Florida Poly was founded in 2012 and opened its doors to students in 2014. The university is located on a 178-acre campus in Lakeland, Florida. Florida Polytechnic University joined the Florida higher education system as its newest member a few years ago. This new university was created and construction on raw land adjacent to I-4, a part of the nation’s interstate system.Public safety was located initially in a single-wide trailer, later expanded to add another trailer connected together. The police department, a critical public safety entity was housed in a structure that would not survive the weakest hurricane strength winds forcing the department to relocate equipment and personnel for every natural event and storm.
CPS was retained by the University to conduct a spatial needs assessment for current needs as well as spatial needs as the university and its public safety department grow over the years to come. Sites around the main campus were examined with the goal of providing information that the university could use to relocate the department in the future..
