Gonzales, LA Police Department Space Needs Study
Gonzales is a city in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is located on the Mississippi River, about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge. The city has a population of over 12,000 people.
Gonzales was founded in 1763 by French colonists. The city was named after Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana at the time. Gonzales was a major port city in the early 19th century, and was a center of trade and commerce.
Today, Gonzales is a thriving city with a diverse economy. The city is home to a number of businesses, including manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Gonzales is also home to a number of cultural attractions, including the Gonzales Historical Museum, the Gonzales Arts & Cultural Center, and the Gonzales Fairgrounds.
The city’s police department occupied an older structure adjacent to the city hall facility. The city had acquired a parcel of land nearby that had been a community pool but the pool had been closed several years previously. The city’s municipal court and administrative offices needed additional space that could come from the space used by the police department.
CPS was retained to undertake a preliminary and subsequently a detailed space needs study for a new police department as well as to examine the purchased site and a couple of other parcels around the city.
The recommendation was to demolish the fill the pool site and construct a new police facility there as the land size would allow for consolidation of police services, enable the city to give up several rented spaces and allow for a vehicle sally port as well as secured parking for police and staff vehicles and a community meeting space for the general public.
A public park and playground were included in the recommendation as this would serve to provide public access spaces for an adjacent affordable housing complex. The location would also offer the department an opportunity to create community engagement opportunities.
