Terre Haute, IN Police  Space Needs Study

Terre Haute is the fifth-largest city in Indiana and the county seat of Vigo County. The city is located in the Wabash Valley, about 70 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Terre Haute is home to Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

The Terre Haute Police Department (THPD) is an ILEAC accredited law enforcement agency that serves the city of Terre Haute and Vigo County. The THPD has over 130 sworn officers and civilian staff. The department is divided into three divisions: Operations, Investigations, and Support Services.

The Operations Division is responsible for patrol, traffic enforcement, special response, and incident response. The Investigations Division is responsible for investigating crimes, including violent crimes, property crimes, white collar crime, and auto theft. The Support Services Division is responsible for records, fleet management, training, environmental protection, and civilian support staff.

In recent years, the THPD has faced a number of challenges, including a shortage of officers, an aging police facility, and an increase in crime. However, the department has also made a number of progress, including implementing new community policing initiatives, investing in new technology, and improving training for officers.

The THPD is committed to providing the citizens of Terre Haute and Vigo County with the highest quality of law enforcement services. The department is working hard to address the challenges it faces and to make Terre Haute a safe and vibrant community.

The city had acquired three buildings downtown that were cobbled together and joined to make a police facility. The issues with these structures were too numerous to list including a hallway held up from beneath with steel poles, an old vault located in the Chief’s office that held department ammunition and parts of several buildings on the second floor that had been sealed in the 1950's and 1960’s and could not be used because of structural issues. CPS looked at sites around the city and conducted a space needs study for a new police facility.
