Trenton, FL Fire Department and City Hall Space Needs Study
Trenton is a city in Gilchrist County, Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Gilchrist County and has a population of around 2,000 people. Trenton is located in north-central Florida, about 30 miles south of Gainesville.
The city was founded in 1883 and was originally named Joppa. The name was changed to Trenton in 1886. Trenton was a major agricultural center in the early 20th century, and was known for its watermelons, cotton, pulpwood, and turpentine.
Today, Trenton is a small, rural community with a strong sense of community. The city has a number of parks and recreation facilities, as well as a library, museum, and art gallery. Trenton is also home to a number of businesses, including restaurants, shops, and service providers.
Growth contributed 20+% to the city’s population in four short years with no signs of slowing. The city had its main fire station downtown co-located with the police department.
The facility was essentially a metal shed offering little to no survivability in a high wind environment. 60% of the hurricanes which make landfall in the United States affect the State of Florida and Trenton also serves as the county seat. City hall, located in an old building downtown could not use the second floor due to structural issues. In an area of the state known for sinkholes, a small one had opened adjacent to the city hall facility leading its officials to question future use of the building. City meetings were held in another facility away from the city hall location.
CPS was retained to undertake a space needs study that would examine the city hall and city departments, the police and the fire department with a goal of future consolidation of these services in one facility.
